Dear Students,
Please work with your group to answer one of the essay questions below.  Make sure you do a thorough job of explaining your answer and backing it up with facts from chapter 10 in your Social Studies book.

1.  What happened to the American farmers on the Great Plains AND in the South during the Great Depression?

2.  In what ways was President Roosevelt's idea of what government should do to help the citizens during the Depression  more effective than Herbert Hoover's idea of government?

3.  What type of programs made up the New Deal? What effects did these programs have on the people and economy of the US? Choose at least 2 programs of the New Deal to write about.

Good luck,
Miss Mastronardi

Tenanent farmers could not pay rent so they had to leave. People could no longer grow crops and couldn't afford thier homes. A severe drought on the great plains in the 1930's killed the farmers crops. Dust storms covered homes in soot and ruined crops. The value of cotten went down. People had to move away from their homes. Familys went to California to look for work on ranchs.

Many of the new deals programs Roosevelt created were very helpful including the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Tennessee Vally Authority (TVA).

The CCC created jobs for people who were unemployed. The CCC also protected the natural environment. The CCC workers planted trees, cleared hiking trails, and completed other conservation projects.

The TVA was also another New Deal program. The TVA workers built dams on the Tennessee River to create Hydroelectricity for rural areas. The dams also prevented floods.

We think these programs were very well organized deals created by Franklin D. Roosevelt,(FDR).

Hoover thought the economy could fix its self like it had before. By the time he released the government should get involved it was too late. FDR promised that the government would do something. His plan was to create new deal for the American people. Some of things that the new deal did were create the CCC, TBA, and WPA. The Civilian Conservation Corps better known as the CCC created new jobs for people and protected the natural environment. The Tennessee Valley Authority better known as the TVA built dams to make hydroelectricity. The Works Progress Administration or known as WPA hired people to build streets, schools, parks, and libraries. Then most importantly the social security program provides money to people over the age of 65 or if they have disabilities.

In what ways was President Roosevelt's idea of what government should do to help the citizens during the Depression more effective than Herbert Hoover's idea of government?

FDR created the new deal, it was a lot of programs that would help people that needed the help and that have suffered though rough times. Hoover thought the econemy would improve itself, he thought the government should not do too many things to change the economy.Hoover belived that economic growth came from ordinay people. FDR wanted to help the econemy and americans. Hoover and FDR had different opinions about economic growth.

During the great depression, famers had a lot of trouble paying off their debt. They had trouble even before the great depression. After the war they couldn't sell their crops for as much as usual, so they made less money, but there was an even bigger problem. There was a severe drought in 1933 through 1937, but it came even worse. There was lots of wind everywhere. It ruined crops and covered homes in soot It was known as the Dust Bowl. It was so bad, farmers sold their farms and looked for new work.

One of the important New Deal programs made by FDR was the Civilian Conservation Corps or known as the CCC. It's goal was to hold and protect the natural enviroment. The CCC workers planted trees, cleared hiking trails, and completed other conservation projects.
Another New Deal program was the Tennessee Valley Authority also known as the TVA. People working for the TVA built dams on the Tennessee river. The dams created hydroelectricity in the rural areas in the southwest. The dams also prevented floods.

  7. There is a bunch of "new deal"program, one of them is called Tennessee Valley Authority or the TVA. The TVA build dams on the Tennessie River, to make hydroelectrcity or make eletricity prouduce by moving water. The effort of this program was the people near thos.e places can use hydroelectrcity, people got more jobs, and the dams pervent floods.
The Social security act provides money to people 65 and older. It also gave money to people with disabitys that can not work. It is still in effect
